CHAPTER 204.
An act to incorporate a company for the purpose of building a bridge
over the river Susquehannah, at Havre-de-Grace. |

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland,
That a company be incorporated to build a bridge over the river
Susquehannah, at Havre-de-Grace, to be located by the president
and directors to be appointed under the provisions of this
act. |

2. And be it enacted, That subscription
books be opened for
a capital of one hundred thousand dollars, in shares of twenty
five dollars each, and that subscriptions be taken at Baltimore
under the direction of Robert Smith, John H. Barney, Jacob
Smith, William B. Stokes, William Lorman, or any two or
more of them; at Havre-de-Grace, in Harford county, under
the direction of Paca Smith, William Lansdale and Abraham
I. Thomas, or any one of them; at the lower ferry on the eastern
side of the Susquehannah, under the direction of John
Stump, Joseph Couden, William W. Ramsay, or any one of
them; and at Elkton, under the direction of James Sewall,
Alexander Scott, Joshua Richardson, Tobias Rudulph and
Henry Stump, or any two of them, who are hereby appointed
commissioners for the purposes aforesaid, who shall on or before
the first Monday in May; in the year eighteen hundred and
twenty seven, procure books, and in each make the following
entry: " We, whose names are hereunto subscribed, do promise
to pay to the president and directors of the Havre-de-Grace
Bridge Company, the sum of twenty five dollars, for every
share of stock in said company, set opposite to our respective
names. Witness our hands, this _____ day of _____
eighteen hundred and twenty _____" and shall give notice
in such of the public papers as they may deem expedient, for
one month at least, of the times when, and the places where
the said books will be opened to receive subscriptions of stock
for said company; at which times and places the said commissioners
shall attend, and permit all persons offering in person
or by attorney, duly authorized, to subscribe in said books, which
shall be kept open for that purpose at least four hours every
day for four days, if four days be necessary to complete the
subscriptions to said bridge; and if after four days the full
amount of stock shall not have been subscribed for, the said
commissioners may adjourn from time to time until the whole
number of shares shall be subscribed; of which adjournment
public notice shall be given; Provided always, That every person
offering to subscribe in his own name, or in the name of
any other person or body politic, shall upon subscribing pay
to the attending commissioners, the sum of one dollar for every
share of stock so subscribed for, out of which shall be defrayed
the expense of taking such subscriptions, and the balance |
