the aggregate being $8,064 21.

Table, No. 20, shows certain balances due the State, and
from -whom they are due.

Table, No. 21, shows the indebtedness to the State of sun-
dry Sheriffs, amounting in the aggregate to $46,856 75.

Tb.e late day at which he obtained possession of the books
and papers of his office, occasioned by various impediments
thrown in the way of it, must be his excuse for not calling
the attention of your Honorable Body to several matters of
interest to the State touching this Department, which he de-
sired to do. He has not had sufficient time to make the in-
vestigations and gather the necessary facts, and does not
think proper to make suggestions, or venture upon recom-
mendations, without the certainty of the information under
which he acted being correct.
