The Senate proceeded to a temporary organization.
On motion by Mr. Fields,

The Hon. John K. Longwell, of Carroll county, was called
to the chair, and, having assumed the same, addressed the
Senators present.

On motion by Mr. Fields,

The Senators elect then qualified by taking the oath pro-
scribed by the Constitution.

On motion by Mr. Earle, it was

Ordered to be entered on the Journal that the Hon. Henry
Williams, of Calvert, is absent on account of sickness.

On motionb by Mr. Davis,
The Senate adjourned until 12 o'clock, M., to-morrow.

THURSDAY, January 8th, 1874.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.
Present at roll-call the following Senators :

Messrs. Aydelotte, Blake, Brewer, Billingsley, Brattan,
Carroll, Crawford, Claggett, Davis, Denson, Earle, Fields,
Getty, Knight, Longwell, Lloyd, Mudd, McCullough. Phelps,
Stevens, Steiner, Spencer, Suit, Tuck, Walsh—25.

On motion by Mr. Tuck,
The Senate proceeded to the election of President.

Mr. Tuck nominated the Hon. John Lee Carroll, the Sena-
tor for Howard county.

The ballots having been taken and counted by Messrs. Craw-
ford and Suit, tellers, it appeared that there were twenty-four
votes cast, of which the Hon. John Lee Carroll received twen-
ty-one, and that there were 3 blank votes.

Whereupon, it was declared that the Hon. John Lee Car-
roll is duly elected President of the Senate.
