meat and toxicology samples for the Office of
Animal Health; test fruits, vegetables, commercial
feeds, and soils for chemical residues; and make
other determinations as required by Departmental
activities (Code Agriculture Article, secs. 5-101
through 5-114; 6-101 through 6-117; 6-201
through 6-220; 6-301 through 6-310).

The Weights and Measures Section has custody
of, maintains, and safeguards the State's primary
standards as well as secondary standards and
equipment for the enforcement of Maryland's
Weights and Measures Law. It maintains supervi-
sion over weighing and measuring devices,
weights and measures, and packaged commodities
offered for sale, sold, or in use in the State. This
supervision extends to the methodology employed
in obtaining accurate measurement and providing
a means for value comparisons.
The Section also licenses and tests personnel
who determine butterfat content for dairy cooper-
atives to use in determining payment to produc-
ers. It also licenses personnel who calibrate farm
milk tanks. It administers and enforces Title 11,
Agriculture Article, Annotated Code of Mary-
land, which is designed to ensure accuracy and
equity in the sale and measurement of commodity
and similar transactions (Code Agriculture Arti-
cle, secs. 11-101 through 11-509).

The Wholesome Meat Advisory Council was
established pursuant to the Maryland Wholesome
Meat Act (Chapter 618, Acts of 1968). It was
originally created for a period of three years to
provide broadened representation in policy deter-
minations with regard to meat inspection in the
State, but its existence was extended indefinitely
bv Chanter 66. Acts of 1971. The Council advises

relating to meat inspection and the establishment
of protection standards.
Council members are appointed by the Gover-
nor from representatives of the Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene, the Baltimore City
Health Department, the Maryland Farm Bureau,
the Maryland Agricultural Commission, the
Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the
Attorney General, the Maryland Frozen Food
Locker Association, Inc., and the slaughtering
and processing industry. One ex officio member is
designated by the Secretary of Agriculture (Code
Agriculture Article, sec. 4-105).

The Director of the Division of Agricultural
Development and Marketing is responsible for su-
pervision and direction of the Marketing Section.
In addition, the Director provides administrative
support and guidance to eight boards and com-
missions that serve agriculture: Maryland Agri-
cultural Fair Board, Maryland Agricultural Land
Preservation Foundation, State Apple Commis-
sion, Board of Inspection of Horse Riding Sta-
bles, State Board of Veterinary Medical Examin-
ers, State Soil Conservation Committee, Inspector
of Tobacco, and Tobacco Authority.

The Marketing Section provides programs and
services designed to help all segments of the econ-
omy through the market system from producer to
consumer. Programs include: market improve-
ment projects to improve quality and presenta-
tion of agricultural commodities and to enhance
consumer acceptance; international marketing;
market news and statistical reporting services in
conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agri-
culture; and an active consumer marketing infor-
mation program.
The Section also contains the Information Of-
fice, which issues news releases to the media and
prepares certain publications and reports.
