The Department of Agriculture traces its origin to the Maryland Agricultural College (chartered in
1856), which is now known as the University of Maryland. Trustees of the college served as the State
Board of Agriculture (Chapter 326, Acts of 1888). This board was abolished in 1972, when the De-
partment of Agriculture was created (Chapter 342, Acts of 1972).
The Department of Agriculture consists of the following offices, boards, commissions, and agencies:
Division of Animal Health and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industries and Pest Management,
Division of Agricultural Development and Marketing, the Inspector of Tobacco, the Tobacco Authori-
ty of the State of Maryland, the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board, the Maryland State Apple Com-
mission, the Chief of Weights and Measures, the State Chemist, the State Veterinarian, the State Board
of Veterinary Medical Examiners, the Wholesome Meat Advisory Council of Maryland, the State Soil
Conservation Committee, the Board of Review of the Department of Agriculture, the Maryland Agri-
cultural Commission, the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation, and the State Board
of Inspection of Horse Riding Stables.
In addition, the following agencies were abolished and their functions transferred to the Department
of Agriculture: the State Horticultural Department, the State Entomologist, the State Pathologist, the
State Horticulturist, the Department of Drainage, the State Drainage Engineer, and the Maryland
State Department of Markets (Code Agriculture Article, secs. 2-101 through 2-107).

The Maryland Agricultural Commission, creat-
ed by Chapter 552, Acts of 1968, succeeded the
Agricultural Advisory Board established by
Chapter 470, Acts of 1961. The Commission has
as its chief function the advancement of Mary-
land agriculture and serves as an advisory body
to the Secretary of Agriculture on all matters per-
taining to agriculture. The Commission formu-
lates and makes proposals for the advancement of
agriculture, assists in the promotion of Maryland
agricultural industries and products, and advises
the Department of Natural Resources on pro-
posed wetland regulations.
