Koch, State Service and Executive Officer Federal Building, Room 113, 31 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore 21201 Telephone: 383-3350 The Maryland Veterans' Commission was first established by Chap- ter 344, Acts of 1924, reorganized by Chapter 803, Acts of 1945, further reorganized by Chapter 310, Acts of 1968, and still further reorganized by Chapters 370 and 617, Acts of 1971. It is composed of nine Maryland veterans appointed by the Governor for seven year terms. One of the members is designated by the Secretary of Employ- ment and Social Services as the Chairman. A resident of each con- gressional district is represented and one member serves at large. The Commission appoints the State Service Officer, who serves as admin- istrative director of the agency. The State Commanders of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled Ameri- can Veterans, the Spanish-American War Veterans, the World War I Veterans, the Catholic War Veterans, the Jewish War Veterans and a designee of the Fleet Reserve Association as determined by the Board of Directors of Branch 6 serve as an advisory committee to the Commission. The Maryland Veterans' Commission makes such rules and regula- tions as it deems necessary for the administration and preparation in proper form for presentation and prosecution of claims by veterans and their dependents with the U. S. Veterans Administration and other Federal, State and local subdivisions and secures and expedites action of these claims. The Commission administers a fund, appropriated annually to pro- vide the necessities of life to distressed veterans, widows of veterans and their infant children, to provide medical care for those who are ill, and funeral expenses for deceased veterans. The agency also assists veterans and their dependents in securing Federal, state or local aid to which they may be entitled. The Commission maintains a perm- anent registry of graves of all persons who served in the military or naval forces of the country in time of war and are buried in Maryland (Code 1957, 1964 Repl. Vol., 1971 Supp., Art. 96 1/2, sees. 3-7).
