Preston Street, Baltimore 21201 Telephone: 383-2636 The Maryland State School Health Council was formally reorgan- ized in 1966 and serves in an advisory capacity to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Maryland State Department of Education, which have official responsibility for the school health program. The purpose of the Council is to assist in the development and maintenance of school health programs which will afford maximum health benefits to every school age child in Maryland. The Council is also to promote effective and comprehensive school health programs that provide a sage, healthful school environment, instruction for health and safety, and appropriate school health services. To this .end, the Council studies plans, and recommends action aimed at the identification of health needs and remediation of health programs of school age children, and it serves as a forum for the two State agencies, their local counterparts, and other groups con- cerned with the health of school age children. The Council consists of two representatives from each of the twenty-three counties and Baltimore City, one representing health and the other education, together with the eighteen members of the Execu- tive Board. The Executive Board includes three members of the general body elected by it, two representatives of the State Depart- ment of Education appointed by the State Superintendent of Schools, representatives of the State Department of Health and Mental Hy- giene, one representative of the Social Services Administration, ap- pointed by the Director of Social Services, one representative of the American Academy of Pediatrics appointed by the Maryland Chapter of the Academy, one representative of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland appointed by the Faculty, one representative appointed by the Maryland Association of School Super- intendents, one representative appointed by the Conference of Health Officers, one representative appointed by the Maryland State Asso- ciation for Higher Education, one representative appointed by the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers, one representative ap- pointed by the Maryland State Nurses Association, one representative appointed by the Department of Education of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and one representative appointed by the Maryland State Teachers Association. Members of the Executive Board serve three- year terms. The Council selects its own officers. At the request of the Genera] Assembly, the Governor designated the School Health Council as the committee to develop a program which will aid in the detection and prevention of communicable dis- eases with particular emphasis on the protection of public school children in Maryland (Res.
