By Chapter 98, Acts of 1956, the General Assembly authorized the
construction of the Maryland Children's Center for the Department of
Public Welfare. Children adjudged delinquent by the courts may be
sent to the Center for not more than thirty days. The Center is to
study each child and make recommendations to the court regarding
an appropriate treatment program. The Center has a capacity for 56
children.

This institution was established by Chapter 374, Acts of 1850 as the
House of Refuge. When it was purchased by the State by Chapter
300, Acts of 1918, it adopted its present name. The school provides
for the care and training of delinquent boys. During the fiscal year
1960 it provided care for 591 boys committed to the school and 393
who were detained there.

This school was established as the Female House of Refuge by
Chapter 156, Acts of 1886 and purchased by the State by Chapter 303,
Acts of 1918. When the School was moved from Baltimore to its
present site in 1922, it adopted its present name by Chapter 215, Acts
of 1922. The School provides for the care and training of delinquent
girls fourteen years of age and over. During the fiscal year 1960, it
provided care for 141 girls who were committed to the school and 127
girls who were detained there.
