holding

United States shall be on the first Monday of October, eighteen
hundred and six, and on the same day in every second year
thereafter ; the next election of electors of the senate on the first
Monday of September, eighteen hundred and six, and on the
same day in every fifth year thereafter; the next election of
delegates to the general assembly on the first Monday of Octo-
ber next, and on the same day in every year thereafter; the
next election of sheriffs on the first Monday of October, eigh-
teen hundred and six, and on the same day in every third year
thereafter, in the several districts, and at the several places,
established for the holding of elections by the commissioners
appointed under the act, entitled, an act to regulate elections,
passed at November session, seventeen hundred and ninety-
nine, chapter fifty, except in Saint Mary's, Cecil, Washington,
Allegany, and Prince George's counties, where they shall be
held as established under the act of November session, eighteen
hundred and one, chapter fifty-nine, except only in the second
district in the aforesaid county of Allegany, where, instead of
being held at John Simkins's tavern as formerly, it shall in
future be held at some house in Selby's Port in said second
district, except also in the fourth district in Montgomery, where
they shall in future be held as directed by an act passed at the
present session, in Frederick county, where they shall be held
as established under the act of November session, eighteen
hundred and three, chapter forty-six, and except in the third
district of Caroline county, where they shall hereafter be held
at the place called and known by the name of The Walnut
Trees, in said district.
This section has been essentially and frequently modified, by subse-
quent acts.
The election of representatives to the congress of the United States, is
now held under the act of 1832, ch. 275.
There is now no election of electors of the senate, they spring directly
from the people. Under the amendments to the constitution, adopted in
1836, ch. 197, the election of delegates to the general assembly, and all
other elections, come on the first Wednesday in October.
The act of 1799, ch. 50, sec. 20, after naming commissioners for the
several counties in the state, enacts, 'that they he and are hereby appointed
commissioners to lay off, designate and number the districts in their respec-
tive counties, and to fix the place where the election shall he held in each
district thereof.'
The act of 1801, ch. 59, sec. 1 and 2, contain the following provisions :
'WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that several of the
election districts in the counties of St. Mary's, Cecil, Washington and Alie-
gany, have not been laid off by the commissioners appointed under the act
to regulate elections, as nearly equal as possible, having regard to the popu-
lation, extent and convenience of voters, and that great inconvenience is
experienced from attending places of holding elections from their not being
central in said districts: And whereas by the assumption of jurisdiction by
congress over the District of Columbia, the election districts of Prince
