duties assigned to him by this act; and that he shall not

 

directly or indirectly be concerned in buying, selling or ship-

 

ping ground bark.

Quality.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That no ground black oak bark,

 

the produce of the United States, shall be shipped from the port

 

of Baltimore, except such as in the opinion of the inspector

 

shall be shaved clean from the ross or outside bark, ground suf-

 

ficiently fine, and be free from damage, by wet, mould or other-

 

wise, well packed in good and sufficient casks, having at least

 

twelve hoops thereon, together with lining hoops on each, and

 

well secured.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted. That the bark intended for expor-

otherwise.

from damage, the inspector shall condemn the same as unfit for

 

exportation ; and as a mark of such condemnation, shall mark

 

on each head, distinctly with a marking iron, the letter 'C ;' and

 

every person altering or defacing such mark with a view of

 

evading this act, shall forfeit and pay for every such offence

 

the sum of twenty dollars, to be recovered by action of debt

 

brought in the name of the state, before any justice of the peace

 

for the county in which the offence may be committed ; and

 

one half of said penalty when recovered, shall be for the use

 

of the informer, and the other half for the use of the state, to

 

be paid to the register of the city, when recovered in the county

 

of Baltimore, and to the clerk of the county wherein it may be

 

recovered, when recovered in any other county.

SEC.6. And be it further enacted. That every manufacturer

opinion of the inspector, may be necessary ; and it shall be the

 

duty of the inspector to grant to the person depositing such

 

bark, or the owner thereof, a receipt or acknowledgment of the
