and had provided for a tax to repay the grant and maintain the lighthouse.
Maryland authorized the Virginia managers to draw from the Maryland trea-
sury three fifths as much as they drew from their own to a total of not more than
£3600. To raise this sum, a tax of four pence per ton was laid on all vessels
corning into Maryland. After the costs of building the lighthouse were met,
the tax for maintenance dropped to one and a half pence per ton (pp. 256-259).
