                  330 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.

            Lib. H. D.       Decemr 2nd 1697.

            The Councill mett & sate and were

                             Present

           

              His EXnCY ffrans Nicholson Esqr Capt Genll &ca

                         Sr Thomas Laurence Secry

                    Coll Henr Iowles: Thos Tench Esqr

           

                    The weather proving so extreme severe and Sharp that it

                  was not possible for any more of his Majtes Honoble Councill

                  to meet this day according to summons; the Creeks and Riv

                  ers being all so frozen in that no Boats could pass; and his

                  Honr Colo Greenberry who lives neer to this place lying in a

                  weak & dangerous condition. His Exncy is pleased to direct

                  and Order that what persons had business or were summoned

                  to appear at this Board and were now attending should be

                  called in.

                    Mr George Jackson one of the Inhabitants of this place

                  being summoned came accordingly.

                    His Exncy is pleased to tell him that if he had any occasion

                  of sending Letters or other business to his Exncy Sr Edmund

                  Andros his Majtes Governr of Virginia, he should have a horse

                  at any time so farr as the Limmitts of this Province did extend.

                  Mr Beard the High Sheriff having directions given him to

                  provide for him accordingly, whensoever he should require the

                  same.

                    The Honoble Thomas Tench Esqr representing to the Board

                  (by information of Major Iames Smallwood of Charles

                  County) how that the King of the Mattawoman Indians is of

                  late much slighted & rejected by the Indians and that it is be

                  lieved if he were Encouraged and taken notice off by the

                  English he might be serviceable and discover the perpetrators

                  of the late horrid murther committed at the Garrison Ordered

                  thereupon that Mr Richard Cloud one of the Gentlemen ap

                  pointed for deciding differences betwixt the English and

                  Indians in St Maries County do upon sight hereof go to the

                  sd Indian King and acquaint him tht if he is minded to remove

                  himselfe from among them, he will be taken care off by Major

                  Smallwood and entertain'd either at his own house or what

               p. 606 other house he likes best. And the said Major Smallwood is

                  hereby Ordered to provide for him and take care accordingly;

                  ffor wch he will be satisfyed the next Assembly out of the

                  publick Stock.

                    The Sherriff of Ann Arrundell County makes return to the

                  following Summons to him directed.
