allotted for a Towne; Hee this Dept answered that there was
nothing in the Act that could obleige My Lord to any such
Gift, Upon which sd Carvile said, if My Lord poles us wee
must pole him And said moreover that the greate Ones would
runn the Countrey downe if it was not for him that durst
oppose them, And further this Dept saith that Mr Doyne
demanding some Tobacco of sd Carvile for flees that were due
to the honble the Secrys the said Carvile said he would pay noe
more then his due, and said that there was something charged
to his account contrary to Law, upon which Mr Doyne told
him that if he would not pay him he must take him in Execu-
tion, and thereupon the sd Carvile dared him to doe it, And
the sd Dept Saith that he did beleive that the sd Carvile was
not in his right Senses, And further this Dept saith not

The Deposition of Mr Thomas Mudd taken
this 11th of January 1683:
This Dept saith that upon the fourth instant this Dept being
at the house of Mr Joshua Doyne, there being at that time Mr
Joseph Pile, Capt James Bowling and Mr Robert Carvile, that
this Dept did then heare the sd Carvile say that he remembered
that my Lord and Coll Digges had promised to the Assembly
that what land of theirs happened to be allotted for Towne
lands, they would freely give, and further this Dept Saith not

The Deposition of Mr Joseph Pile taken this
11th Day of January Anno 1683:
This Dept saith that upon the fourth day instant this Dept
being at the house of Mr Joshua Doyne, in Company of Mr
James Bowling, Mr Thomas Mudd, & Mr Robert Carvile
there happened a discourse about the Act for Advancemt of
Trade, and the sd Carvile said that my Lord must give his
Land, and it was replyed why must he, the said Carvile made

answer because he had promised it, answer was made that it
did not appeare by the words of the Act, the said Carvile
replyed, this is a brave way of wyer drawing, to make fair
promises to work their owne Ends, and not performe: upon
discourse afterwards touching the Secrys raiseing their ffees
for drawing and recording Pattents, the sd Carvile said that if
it was not for him, that there was not a mann in the Countrey
that durst Speake in his owne Right, the sd Carvile further
