We thought good to give your Excellency timely notice
thereof, that your Excellency may consider to do what you
conceive your duty on such occasion, the charge of this present
Expedition cannot as yet be Computed but must Certainly be
greater then this small Province can well afford, we hope if

Fort Wm Henry the 11th of March 1692
Sr
This comes to give your Excellency an accot of the small
victory over that party of French and Indians that lately
Invaded our Maquaes Countrey, they had taken & destroyed
the three Maquaes Castles most of their Men & all their
Women & Children Prisoners ere our forces could Come up
for their relief

On the 8th of February the Alarm was given at Albany the
13th about 4 a Clock afternoon Major Schuyler Marched from
Schennectada with 250 Men 14th was within 8 Miles of the
Enemy on their way home 15th about Noon Major Schuyler
was Ioyned by 290 of our upper Indians 16th Came up With
the Enemys place of rest the night preceeding & was advised
the Enemy had fortified themselves within Two Miles on the
head of a rising peice of Ground wherein they had dug Square
Pitts about 4 or 5 ft depth this day Arnout the Interpreters
Son run over from the Enemy gave their Number to be 700
the 17th came in sight of their fort about 8 a Clock in the
morning our Indians immediately went about Fortifying
within 300 Paces of the Enemy being Covered by our
Christians the French Sallyed out upon them & our Chris-
tians posted in the way gave them such a Blow as made them
return into their Fort & so a 2d & 3d time after which they
made preparations for Flight, the night following being cold
Snowy Weather which they Effected, our Indians & they did
threaten one another concerning the Prisoners which had this
Effect, Our Indians refused to Fire upon the French & they
gave the Prisoners their Liberty who are all returned the
want of Provisions did stop the persuit till next Day &
coming up with the River Side found the enemy had got over
by a Large Cake of Ice fast in the narrow place of the River
