ULYSSES S. GRANT Portrait taken from James Beard Lithograph.

ULYSSES S. GRANT was the man to whom Lincoln gave the task of preserving the Union. Grant, after defeating Robert E. Lee and accepting his surrender at Appomatox courthouse, was a war hero. He was elected president in 1869 and served two terms. As part of his first campaign platform, he promised that he would seek the passage of the 15th Amendment.
